Below are some of the stories that I am most proud of from my year reporting for Carolina Connection. As a reporter, I gained experience in script writing, interviewing, voicing, and editing. As a producer, I gained experience leading pitch meetings, providing advice to a 12-person newsroom, and timing out the program.

James Cates Jr. was a 22-year-old Black Chapel Hill resident who was killed in the middle of UNC’s campus in 1970. While the Department of Justice has reopened his case, the university had no permanent memorial to commemorate Cates until November 2022. Cates might be gone, but his family, the community, and student activists will not stop until his story is known all around campus.
Franklin Street is the center for entertainment, food, and businesses in Chapel Hill. It is a popular place for students, residents, and visitors, but people have reported feeling less safe downtown.

RSV cases overwhelmed UNC hospitals. I spoke to a undergraduate, doctor, and medical student about how the supposed end of pandemic has led to a “tripledemic.”
